The corner of Rex's eye gave a barely noticeable twitch. Acting as if nothing had happened, he withdrew his gaze and was just about to sign the document when a distinctly familiar man's voice rang out down the hall.

"Tanya, I am so sorry for making you waste your time accompanying my mom to the hospital for her checkup again."

Rex didn't even need to look up to know it was Asher.

The pen in his hand slipped violently, dragging a thick, jagged line of ink right across the signature line.

The intern watched in utter confusion, suddenly feeling an intense, chilling aura radiating from Rex. This wasn't the easygoing, laughing doctor they were used to.

"Dr. Wilkinson? Is there an issue with the document?"

"No, my mistake."

His expression completely blank, Rex brought the pen back to the paper, slashed his signature across the line, shoved the clipboard back at the intern, and stormed back into his office, hands jammed deep in his pockets.

The intern took the clipboard, thoroughly confused, and started heading back to the HR department.

But before she even took two steps, a gust of wind blew past her. She spun around to see the previously composed doctor practically sprinting down the hallway in the opposite direction.

Tanya, gently supporting Asher's mother, walked toward the elevators alongside Asher.

"Honestly, look at you,"

Marcella shot her son a mock glare. "I could have easily come by myself, but you had to go and drag Tanya here to escort me."

Since her last major surgery, Marcella still hadn't fully regained her strength.

This was her final follow-up appointment; after today, she would be completely cleared.

Asher instinctively looked over at Tanya, about to reply, when he noticed she was totally zoning out. She was seconds away from walking straight into a passerby when he shot his hand out, yanking her close to him.

"Where's your head at?"

Tanya snapped out of her daze. She blinked, quickly shaking her head. "Nowhere. I just spaced out for a second."
